2007-2008 Event Numbering System
A U.S. Navy R4D airplane en route to the South Pole in 1957. Photo by Cmdr Jim Waldron, USNR (Retired), courtesy of the Antarctic Photo Library. The civil version of this old Navy workhorse was the DC-3. The current USAP fleet operated by Kenn Borek Air includes a Basler, a DC-3 airframe updated and enhanced for modern polar service.
Event Numbering System
All projects are identified by a unique event number. It comprises a prefix, a three-digit number, and a suffix.
Prefix
The prefix is a letter that indicates the USAP program funding a project.
Prefix USAP Program (link to index)
A Aeronomy & Astrophysics
B Organisms and Ecosystems
G Earth Sciences
I Glaciology
O Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
W Artists and Writers
Y International Polar Year (IPY) Education and Outreach
C Integrated and System Sciences

Three-Digit Number List Projects By Event Number
The three-digit number provides the uniqueness for each event number. No two projects have the same number.
Suffix
The suffix represents the supporting station. If field work takes place at more than one location the event number carries more than one suffix separated by a slash.
Suffix Supporting Station (link to index)
M McMurdo Station
P Palmer Station
S South Pole Station
L ARSV Laurence M. Gould
N RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer
E Special projects supported by the USAP.
Examples include investigators working with other national Antarctic programs, and groups working on islands in the peninsula.
