Purpose Statement
A New Generation Polar Research Vessel (PRV) is in the early planning stages for the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer replacement. The Palmer contract ends in either 2008 or 2012 at NSF's option. The new vessel will support expected science needs in the next decades. Two science workshops have already been held to provide initial guidance regarding the PRV’s science and technical capabilities. Links to the workshop reports are included in this web site. This web forum will provide an open means to solicit, gather and incorporate input from the broad community of potential ship users: scientists, technicians, operators, managers and all who have a vested interest in the new ship. In effect, this forum will be a project management tool for developing, collecting and organizing PRV science and technical requirements. After project completion, this forum will be maintained as a public history of the project. Your comments and advice are most welcome. We will consider all input and endeavor to answer each comment. Regards, The PRV Project Team |
