High-Latitude Conjugate Area Array Experiment to Investigate Solar Wind - Magnetosphere - Ionosphere Coupling

This project is directed toward an investigation of the coupling phenomena between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere, particularly on the dayside of the Earth and observed simultaneously at high latitudes in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres with several magnetometers deployed in the Antarctic, Greenland, and Svalbard. In addition to the meridional array of already deployed autonomous, low-powered (AALPIP) magnetometers in the East Antarctic, two more stations will be deployed across Dome A and eastward toward the Chinese station Zhongshan. This deployment will establish two conjugate latitudinal chains of 4 stations in each polar cap that would be capable of addressing outstanding questions pertaining to the generation and propagation of natural, ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves.
Field Season Overview
This project involves the production and testing of instrumentation that will be shipped to the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) for deployment in Antarctica near Taishan and Kunlun stations (see Figure 1). Two new Autonomous Adaptive Low-Power Instrument Platforms (AAL-PIP) will be constructed and tested in the US, then shipped to Shanghai, China where PRIC staff will be instructed on their deployment. The grantee has budgeted for purchase and assembly costs of the instruments, shipping of them to China, and travel for US participants to China. The shipment of the instruments to, and deployment in, Antarctica will be undertaken by PRIC at no cost to USAP. PRIC will also provide Iridium SIM cards and data transfer services for them at no cost to USAP. While the instruments will remain the property of the USAP, PRIC will deploy instruments along the route Zhongshan – Kunlun in East Antarctica, as well as will accept custody and support responsibility for them, including removal from the field at the end of the project. Any future maintenance, repair or retrograde requirements which are not performed by PRIC, will be subject to review and approval by NSF.
