Umihiko ("Umi") Hoshijima, a postdoctoral researcher in ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz, died in a diving accident while working on a research project in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey near Glacier Bay, Alaska, on Aug. 7, according to a university news release.

He was 28.

In graduate school at UC Santa Barbara, Hoshijima studied the effects of ocean acidification on marine species, from the sea urchins inhabiting the kelp forests near Santa Barbara to the tiny, planktonic snails at the base of the Antarctic food web.

In Antarctica, he deployed as part of team led by UCSB marine biologist Gretchen Hofmann: http://www.hofmannlab.com/-umihiko-hoshijima.html
