On this date in 1872, Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen was born. Amundsen led the expedition of 1910–12 that was the first to reach the South Pole, beating Royal Navy Capt. Robert F. Scott’s party by more than 30 days.

NSF’s Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica was named after the two men.

Amundsen is recognized as the first person to have reached both poles and in 1926, Amundsen and 15 other men also made the first crossing of the Arctic by air, in the airship Norge.

He died In June 1928.
