National Science Foundation Posted December 17, 2018 Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, #WrightBrothersDay, marks the 115th anniversary of Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first heavier-than-air, controlled, powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. NSF's Office of Polar Programs relies heavily on aircraft-- “fixed wing” and helicopters, military and civilian--to carry out its mission of supporting world-class science in the polar regions.
