Midsummer? Midwinter? It's All Relative.June 21, 2018![]() National Science Foundation When the summer solstice dawned on June 21st, 2018 at NSF's Summit Station in Greenland, the winter solstice had come to the three cold and far darker U.S. research stations in Antarctica: McMurdo, Amundsen-Scott and Palmer. Depending upon where and WHEN you were--U.S. Antarctic stations keep New Zealand time and so are almost a day ahead--it was either the longest OR the shortest day of the year. But whether in the Arctic or the Antarctic, those far from home, supporting cutting-edge NSF-funded science at Earth's far frontiers (and in one case, REALLY missing fresh fruit) took a break from their long workdays to send the rest of the world about three-minutes-worth of "solstice greetings."
