The United States is a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty, which sets aside Antarctica as place for peaceful pursuits, primarily scientific research. The U.S. Antarctic program, managed by the National Science Foundation, represents the principal expression of the U.S. interest in Antarctic, which is the support of scientific research.

The Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, adopted 25 years ago, further strengthened environmental protection of Antarctica, as explained in this video, produced by the Australian Antarctic Division.
