Description

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Ice Drilling Program (IDP) (1) provides community leadership in ice-drilling research and development; (2) identifies new technology needs and plans technology development and funding; (3) acquires new drilling technology to support science objectives for new discoveries; (4) provides the drills, equipment, and drilling expertise needed by science groups; (5) enhances communication and information exchange related to ice-coring and -drilling science and technology; and (6) establishes activities in collaboration with the polar science and engineering community to contribute to NSF's strategic goals for desired societal outcomes.

Field Season Overview

IDP participants will not deploy during the 2026-27 season. The United States Antarctic Program (USAP) will support movement of IDP cargo items (i.e., hand augers) as requested by other science groups. USAP will also support northbound vessel shipment of the Foro 1650 drill system.
